Sonia’s Empowering Update

Sonia’s Empowering Update

February 28th, 2018 participated in a PEP (Panel for Educational Policy), where they were having a rally on some of the schools’ closures in the NYC schools. Where the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) consists of 13 appointed members and the Chancellor. Each borough president appoints one member and the mayor appoints the remaining eight. The Chancellor serves as an ex-officio non-voting member. The PEP is responsible for electing a chairperson from among the voting members.

I attended due to the fact that I help a great deal of parents in the community and wanted to see what is really going on with the schools they are closing. Wanted to know where the children of the closing schools were going to be placed in the 2018/2019 school year. Didn’t get the answer I wanted, however, will be on top of it.

March 1, 2018, visit Metropolitan Hospital in East Harlem NY to get a better perceptive on Mental Illness in our community. The Behavioral Health Outpatient Services deals wide range of outpatient mental health services to individuals with emotional, psychiatric, behavioral, or chemical dependency related issues. The Behavioral Health Inpatient Services deals more with Referrals and transfers to this service may be made through our psychiatric emergency room or any of our MHC clinics. We provide acute care psychiatric inpatient services, consisting of intensive coordinated treatment by a physician-led team of mental health professionals including psychologists, social workers, rehab and addiction counselors, and 24-hour nursing care. Patients receive comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Talked to two highly dedicated people there, (They asked that I don’t use their names). They gave me a tour and I was very impress and sad at the same time. But received a lot of thorough information of how they relate to the patients.

As of now, March 15th my Board Members and I are in the process of our 1st Annual Spring fling, which will be held on May 19th, 2018. It will a Vendors Fundraising Event and will be held at the Kennedy Center (34 West 135th Street) in Manhattan, NY. It will be five hours of great products and people. It will be open to the public.

We are in the process of getting vendors to participate, so far, we are getting calls from people that want to be rent tables but we are not stopping, we need all we can get. We are also looking for volunteers for that day as well. Please visit our website for more information www.soniasempoweringfamilies.or for more info on the event.

Another great event that I will be attending is the first meeting/dinner for Our Democratic Club.  It will be on March 23rd 2018 at the Seniors Center 122nd and 123rd Street 2nd Avenue (Taino Towers) 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. That should be very interesting.
